I didn't know...

it at the time but the 90's were pretty freakin' sweet. Never in my life have I had more free time and discretionary income as I did during the Clinton era. Love him or hate him, those were some good years.

1991 saw me liberated from the four year sentence know as, "high school." Know matter where I go, or who I talk to, they refer to that period in their lives with what I can almost call an unhealthy reverence and nostalgia. It's not like nostalgia is lost on me, I get it. I tend to go there a bit too often myself but, when I do, the last place I want to go is back to high school....EVER.

The early 90's for me were all about enjoying the freedom not having to be in school afforded me. While I admit I lacked direction during this point in time, I really do think a break from the classroom was what I needed. Looking back, had I had any sort of guidance from a counselor or an older brother or maybe just someone I was not supposed to be diametrically opposed to, like my parents, I think it might not have taken me so long to put the rubber to the road so to speak. Eventually the desperate times call forth desperate measures and luckily I was able to get out of my head, get out of the asshole of the country and go away to college. I had less direction that before but at least I was moving, maybe only laterally so but I was moving and that is more productive than treading water. Besides as fun as being a wage slave and going to see bands 3-4 nights a week was, it was not going to last forever.

Watching, "PJ20" I can remember the emergence of Gen X, grunge and how at the time, if we had all been a little more aware then, my generation would be even angrier now. I could be wrong but that's just one mans opinion. The part of the documentary that sticks out the most to me is the Andy Rooney segment they aired, I'm assuming, during Pearl James rise to stardom. The loveable curmudgeon rips on the young people of the day and asks, something to the effect of, "what's the matter with kids today and what have they got to be so upset about?" I suppose at the time it was a fair question. Those same kids he felt were, "belly aching" at the time, well some of them have grown into people who will work until the day they drop dead and not all of them at their dream job.

I don't fault Rooney for taking that position, for all intents and purposes, it's his job. I do however feel that line of thinking was a bit myopic even two decades ago. Either way, having a flash of rage and saying, "Fuck You Andy Rooney!" is not going to change anything and realistically only made me feel better for a few seconds. After finishing the film, I decided I was going to go and listen to the bands discography, since I was only really familiar with the first two or three studio releases. It took the better part of three days and I'm pretty confident in saying I would rate the catalog 9/10 on the whole. Yes, there is not a whole lot of what was put out on their first release, "Ten" but Pearl Jam are a great rock band, who have crafted some amazing music. If you are not familiar or have forgotten about them, I recommend going back and giving them another listen.

I hope you all are well.

Cheers,
JJ

It's the first...

snowfall of the year and the picture to the left reminds me somewhat of the street I grew up on, except there would be less trees and more dog shit-style triple-deckers. Even so, it was still a decent place, until I was about fifteen or so. Even then, there could have been MANY worse places to live. It's all about perspective, at least that's what I believe &  what I tell people.

The big holiday is right around the corner and even though there are less than a month of Sundays before the big day arrives, you'd never know it here. Maybe two houses on the street lit up. We've got a wreath with lights and stuff but, it's over the fire place and not on the door or anything, There is not an official boycott on the big holiday but I'd be lying if I said things are not tight. Between my medical issues and others medical issues in my family, we're pretty much glad to just be alive. I'm putting myself to sleep with this post.

In addition to my usual well wishes, I'd like to ask everyone to be a little nicer to everyone, not just those people who need it, and there are certainly those, but until you've walked a mile in their shoes, you have no idea what they go through. Evan as uncomfortable as my shoes or shoe as the case may be, have been this year, I would not trade them with most people. So, do what you can. I'm not asking for sainthood here. Hug someone who needs it. Call or email a friend. Mend a friendship that has fallen by the wayside. Tell someone you love them. Honestly look at what you have and be grateful.

I hope you all are well.

Cheers,
JJ

The bus is...

Sending out an S.O.S

so far in the ditch I have no idea how to pull it out. I’m like a diver with a bad, bad case of narcosis so, I’m calling all the angels and praying to every god I know and some I don’t. I’ve even said a few nice things to gods who have no idea who I am and just so I can feel like I’ve got all the bases covered, I’ve even asked the advice of the one and only blogfather.
Ive been
eating my vegetables
trying to get a good nights sleep
and made sure I’ve drunk my Ovaltine
any advice, positive vibes or good juju sent my way would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you all are well.

JJ

Life on Planet...

Weird is getting to be really monotonous.

I received a phone call today from the surgeons office. A call I was going to go ahead and make since, after my last checkup, I had no time when my surgery was going to take place, nor no pre-op prescription for antibiotics, which for diabetics is standard operating procedure or at least that's I've been told.

So...the call

I need to give some sort of frame of reference here. The surgery I am about to have, should have happened months ago. However, I was hospitalized with collateral damage from stuff already done to me. While I was on every good anti-biotic known to man, the surgeons thought this would be a great time to filet me and get going on the work needed on my plumbing. Had anyone asked me, I would have thought that was a great idea. HAD ANYONE TOLD ME I WOULD HAVE SHOWED UP FOR SURGERY.

There are few things more embarrassing than getting a call from a surgeon at 8am, asking where I am? So, my date for said surgery was pushed back. 2 MONTHS...not my fault...2 GD MONTHS

Today they call and tell me, "my surgery was never booked."

I suppose I should have been shocked but I wasn't. Disappointed? Yes. Hopeful about getting done on time? Not really. My surgeon was in surgery and so OR co-ordinator was going to talk to him about this SNAFU and I briskly reminded her, "This is the second time I'm missing surgery and neither has been my fault." She reassured me but had not one ounce of confidence in her voice this was going to be taken care of, on time.

So I'm waiting, by the phone, like the weird kid in high school, on a Friday night.

2 whiskies and a vicodin and I can still type like I had a diet coke. Now that's just a damn shame.

I hope you all are well.

Cheers,
JJ

Gotta write quick...

just took some percocet cause the media says Americans have a "prescription" drug problem

muthertrucka, let me not worry
about the authorities
and let me have
my tweed

decent day today. spent some time with my mom. picked up some crafting materials for the impending arrival of my nephew. then out to lunch at this place. taco salad with chicken was bananas good and I might say choosing to pair it with a Revival Zeppelin, might have been one of my better decisions this year. lunch was so good, dinner was not even an after thought and being president of the fat kid society, word is bond.

lots going on and everything feels super important and somewhat frantic and I'm hoping the percocet helps with that as well. scared about my upcoming surgery even though dude is a world renowned plumbing surgeon, I still can't let em see me sweat. it's been a long road and I can see the finish line. i just wish there was not a mile and a half gauntlet of goons in front of it.

where are you HK?

I hope you all are well.

My blog is...

just awful.

You'd think there would be more in here, more of substance at least. However for me it's just a place to sometimes clear my head when, aimless drives and loud music or too many cups of coffee and a good book can't do it. I don't think many of you come round here anymore and that's fine. I don't take it personal. Like I said, "it's my place but, you are more than welcome..." that being said, we now return you to your regularly scheduled program, already in progress.

I try not to look to much into omens or signs or whathaveyou but the universe has been pretty clear with me lately.

driving home on route 1, WHAM! bird into the windshield, dead. Got a phone call from my old nursing assistant instructor tonight. Let the machine get it, can't be bothered. Pretty sure that call is bad news and if it's not, probably not something I have the time for right now.

I sent in my application for permanent disability not two days ago. Letter from SSA today telling me I was denied, that I should apply for TDI. I already applied for TDI and they said GFY.

I've been transported to the galaxy of, "NO" and I'd like to leave asap.

Unemployment: NO
TDI: NO
DISABILITY: NO
Health Coverage: NO

I've had a lot of fucking surgery, hospitalization, trips to the ER and more sitting in waiting rooms than most people I know. Now, I am for sure grateful I am not as sick as numerous others out there but at some point, it would be nice if I could somewhat enjoy life like I see others doing. In the five summers I have been back at home, I have not been healthy enough for ONE beach day. That's the kind of stuff that keeps a man awake at night. That and maybe too many painkillers, if there is such a thing.

This week: M-TH doctor & ER
Next week: Monday Urology, Wednesday ENT
when the hell is it going to stop?

I hope you all are well.

JJ

Progress is Bittersweet...

I’ve been a big fan of Fall Out Boy and the music they’ve made over the years. “Take This to Your Grave” grabbed me by shirt, punched me in the face and said, “Check this out!” I was hooked at Saturday and never looked back. Happy to see FOB achieve minor mainstream success with “From Under the Cork Tree” I was amped. Here is a band with talent, who sing and play their own instruments and they are getting the recognition they deserve. Hum Hallelujah off of “Infinity on High” might be tied with Saturday, as my favorite FOB song of all time.

When, “Folie a Deux” came out, I will be the first one to admit I was not excited. Not because I heard bad things about the recording but because I had literally heard nothing about it. It didn’t even come up on my radar and I considered myself to be up on music, even without delving into the nonsense that is Top 40 / Commercial radio. So...a couple of months after, “Folie a Deux” was out, I gave it a listen. Crushed. It was the only word I could use to describe what I felt. Where was the FOB I knew and loved? Where was the raw aggressive sound I had come to know and love? While, “Folie a Deux” was not my favorite FOB album, it was still lyrically solid and I admired FOB for exploring different avenues to take their music down. I mean after all, it is their music.

Now after the hiatus everyone was sure was the demise of the band, we find a leaner and meaner yet, kinder and gentler FOB. “Save Rock and Roll”, FOB’s latest release is their crossover masterpiece. It’s the album that has all tracks ready to be easily remixed into dance floor anthems. Guest spots on the disc include Courtney Love, Big Sean and self confessed FOB fan, Sir Elton John. Realistically, who is not going to collaborate with Elton John given the chance?

Save Rock and Roll is a great disc, even if it is not my cup of tea. I’m still more inclined towards the edgier and harder stuff but not once whilst listening to SR&R did I say, “OMG this is awful...” Well written lyrics and music from front to back and if you are into Rock and Roll you can dance to, this is your record of the year for sure. My only criticism of the disc is it seems a bit, phoned in. Cut & paste is such a poor choice when you can actually play. Super over produced / processed or whatever. So much so, I worry about how it will translate live. I can’t imagine Andy Hurley was challenged much on this disc. Will there be lots of samples and tapes running during shows? If so, that’s just a shame since these guys are solid musicians and frontman Patrick Stump has proven time and time again he can sing his ass off. That being said Save Rock & Roll from Fall Out Boy receives ⅗ .

I hope you all are well.

Cheers,
JJ

Way back in...

1500 A.D.

when I lived in a land far, far away

in a place high on a hill

Federal Hill to be exact

A chance meeting took place and I was introduced to a magical being

one previously thought only to exist in the minds of artists, dreamers and children

but real as that final exam you really meant to study for and embodying a myriad of admirable qualities

“What did you meet?” you ask.

Well I met a candygnome© of course!

We all know gnomes to be creatures of invention or at least I had been under this assumption.

I was not completely wrong, just a bit off.

candygnomes© are similar to regular gnomes in that they are in fact gnomes

but, rather than spend their days tinkering and puttering around a workshop

creating geegaws and doodads that may or may not be of any use and at the very least

work

candygnomes© are free-spirited & consumed with creating art, telling stories, laughing and eating candy of course

Imagine my surprise arriving home from work and the roommate greets me and says, “look what I found!” I was dumbfounded and excited all at the same time

quickly I ran back out

around the corner

and bought skittles

peach rings

swedish fish

you know, standard candy gnome faire

returning back to the igloo we all called, “home”

the roommate, the candygnome© and I

ate candy and laughed and bullshitted

and giggles could be heard throughout the land

well at least on the darkest side street

behind the restaurant

next to the King of Domestic Violence

in an igloo

on Federal Hill

I hope you all are well.

Cheers,

JJ

Box named Clark...

the following is a transcript of an actual conversation I had with Clark, my computer of some time.

Clark: "Hey JJ."

Me: "Hey Clark."

Clark: "Whatcha' doing?"

Me: "Not much just trying to do a couple things. Maybe get some writing done, listen to music, you know, standard operating procedure for a Sunday."

Clark: "Were you planning on using me?"

Me: "Yeah Clark, I was. Should I make other arrangements? Are you going to give me a hard time or can we just give it a go and see what happens?"

Clark: You know I'm not really a big multi-tasking fan. I get all tense and stuff."

Me: Yeah, Clark I know. I get it. I can hear you locking up already. Have no fear, I'm not planning on doing anything other than writing and maybe listening to music, while I do it."

Clark: "Are you going to listen via the web or what?"

Me: *sigh* "Clark, you know, you're really starting to become somewhat of a drag. It's not like I'm asking you to play games, edit video or do any really intensive stuff. I wish we could not have a panic attack whenever I powered you up."

Clark: "Hey, I hear you man but, I'm old. These new machines would leave me in the dust if you wanted to get one. You don't want to get one, do you?"

Me: "Clark, what is the one thing I have always tried to do?"

Clark: "Uh...not eat the whole goddamned bag of nachos, once you opened it?"

Me: "Nice guess but I was thinking more in terms of technology and my working with it..."

Clark: "OH! I KNOW! Keep it real!"

Me: "exactly. So while I could definitely use a new box, you are still loved and invaluable to me, even though sometimes you can be a stubborn old jerk."

Clark: "Hey!?"

Me: "WHAT Clark, what? Tell me I'm lying! Tell me you don't intentionally give me a royal pain in the ass sometimes?!

Clark: "Fine, I have been know to be a little temperamental sometimes."

Me: "Look, you're still the man, my homeboy, mi compadre. Don't worry about recycling for awhile, ok? Can we just agree if I don't beat you like a rented mule, you won't give me a hard time about being on the internet, playing some tunes and maybe typing?"

Clark: "I think I can get behind that. Can I tell you something?"

Me: "Sure Clark, what's up?"

Clark: "I miss the old days you know? Where we used to live and rock out all the time? Why can't we just go back there?"

Me: "I miss them too Clark. If I knew how to get back there, we wouldn't be having this conversation right now."

Clark: "JJ?"

Me: "Yeah?"

Clark: "Just wanted to give you a heads up. I'm getting a little tired."

Me: "Fair enough. I don't have anything else to really say tonight, Clark."

Clark: "You're not mad, are you?"

Me: "not at all man. Hey get some rest will you?"

Clark: "Ok, I will. Goodnight JJ."

Me: "Night Clark."

I hope you all are well.

JJ

Lately there has

been a lot of this:

11:00 That’s it. I’m done. Going to bed.
1:30am Man, I hate not being able to fall asleep
3:30am Please...Please...Please Mr. Sandman, come on down...
5:30am Oh good, skunked again. Well at least it’s time for my 45 minute nap. The one where I will snap awake, in 43 minutes and then get up cause what the fuck else am I going to do?

Normally the aforementioned events would not be so bothersome to me. However, over the past few months, having had several invasive medical procedures, the fact I can neither position myself comfortably in bed, nor rest for more than an hour or two consecutively, has grown quite tiring, for lack of a better word. While I have always been an advocate for sleeping too much being for losers and dummies, I now wholeheartedly embrace the idea of knowing I have to say when. Due to this epiphany I’m guessing my prior actions have somewhat jilted the sleep fairy and she is not going to come back until she is good and gd ready.

more later...

And...here...we...

GO

T-Minus 90minutes to the car
165 to pre-admit
and
then the real fun begins

I won't lie
I'm scared
Scared like Mel Gibson in Braveheart
when they have his ass in the dungeon
and he is wheeling and dealing
with
the almighty

hopefully it turns out

a little better

for me

I hope you all are well.

Just found out...

that go time is 7:55am at "the hospital" tomorrow.

I can't say I'm really looking forward to this tomorrow.

While I've already been down this road and made it through, relatively unscathed, my kidneys are clenching as I write this. Which is odd because for the most part, they're not involved and won't be under any scrutiny tomorrow but...

there will be pain

and I'm not a,"skirt" so to speak but, I've had my fair share of pain in the past few months
I'm all set
really.

When I was told I was going to a be, "mostly awake" for the procedure, that just made me that much more nervous.
I know it has to get done.
I know I will be fine.
I'm really praying they put me out.

This post sucks and I'm aware of it but it's all I can do for right now.

In the few hours I have left
before I jump out of my skin

I hope you all are well.

maladjusted, just untrusted, rusted, sometimes brilliant, busted thoughts...

and here I sit
wishing and wanting for a fast forward button
a time machine
a chance to do over
just so
I could feel like I had
a shot in hell
at getting something
right
this time

dressing myself in
armour of alternative rock
dreading the next doctors appointment
what’s the point in all of this

I don’t think
I could hate myself more
if I tried

I hope you all are well.

I'm gratefully ashamed...

So the manhunt in Boston is over.

I am grateful no more people were hurt and also they were able to take one of the men responsible for the Patriot Day Bombing, alive.

Let him be tried in a court of law, as a murderer, enemy combatant, domestic terrorist or whatever else the powers that be can come up with, but let him be tried.

I am grateful no one had to witness this man being killed / killing himself, in public. I’m grateful no member of law enforcement / military had to pull the trigger and have a death on their conscience, whether they feel justified or not. I don’t think the act of killing someone, whether it is for the greater good or for nefarious purposes, is easy for someone to handle.

Earlier tonight, I watched the wrap-up news coverage, as the manhunt ended. One of the field reporters or maybe it was Brian Williams, mentioned, “they had not seen people come together like this, since 9.11.01. Hearing that, I was saddened and somewhat ashamed because, I know for the most part, this is probably 85% true.

Over the week, there was a lot of information to take in, whether you were watching / listening / reading, online or in print. It was difficult and frustrating to me, that accurate and factual information were hard to come by, because media outlets were more concerned with being the first ones to break the story.

Even more upsetting to me was as much as this terrible and tragic event united us, it also drove more massive wedges between the people of the united states. I’ve never been a person who will try and argue with other’s opinions. Opinions are subjective and therefore, it’s hard to have a perfect right and wrong when discussing them. However, all week I heard things like, “I’ll bet it was those fucking (insert religious racial slurs here) again.”
...”Well you know this wasn’t a white guy.”
...”they should blow them up when they find them.”
...”I bet the effing President is behind this.”
...”effing liberals will let him go, too much whining and not enough death penalty.”
...”red staters are never going to give up assault weapons now.”
...” what a religion of peace.”

and these are only some of the things I can remember. I would consider myself very liberal, if I had to classify my political leaning. Although I think I may start calling myself more of a personalist or a humanitarian, simply because I only want what I think is best for everyone. Does that mean I believe my views to be infallible and therefore the only ones considered? Of course not but I’m really starting to worry about the division of people in this country, especially in the arenas of health and wealth.

Everyone has value, no matter who they are. Everyone deserves to be loved and to not be put through any more hardship than is necessary. I know this sounds like I want to jump in a VW bus, travel around the country, sing camp-fire songs, and have love ins but, that’s not really where I’m headed. I just really think we all need to be better to each other. In our day to day relationships as well as our world view.

When people ask me what religion I am my usual response is, “I was raised roman catholic but, I no longer practice.” People frequently ask if I have given up on religion and I haven’t. I just can’t see associating myself with an organization that doesn’t practice what it preaches. Christianity on the whole is pretty messed up. Jesus was pretty clear as far as I can see. “Love one another, as I have loved you...”

THAT’S IT.

No, “love one another, as I have loved you unless...”
you’re black
you’re homosexual
you’re republican
you’re a woman
you’re disabled
you’re a child
you’re (insert your own label here)

I really like(d) the idea of the, “It gets better” campaign because, high school was no picnic for me. Looking at high school today, and having spent a good portion of my life working with at-risk kids, you could not pay me enough to go be a teenager again. No way, not with a gun to my head. In many ways, I had it easy with just being overweight. 1500 years ago, when I was in high school, you got bullied at school and then you went home. Once you were in that door, no one could touch you and you had a break.

Now, there are cell phones and internet and whoallknowswhatelse? I’m not trying to demonize technology. I love it. It helps me on a daily basis but I also see how for many people it can be a bigger curse than a blessing. I don’t know when or where society took the turn it did and started down this perilously slippery slope we’re on. I wish I did because at least then I would have some idea as to how to form a plan to fix the path we’re on. What am I talking about? These three stories, I fear are just the tip of the iceberg. Rehtaeh Parsons Audrie Pott WTF is wrong in Steubenville?!

Admittedly these stories are horrific enough on their own but to discover there were adults, who in some cases told youths, “not to worry about it, I’ll get it taken care of...” leads me to believe my hope in humanity is pointless. Lives are ruined on both sides. No matter how much therapy or jail each party goes through, nothing removes what has been done.

We need to do better by our kids.

I hope you all are well.

Cheers,
jj

I wanted to...

write something that had some pop to it.
something to catch the eye
but today
today just took it out of me

people who kill innocent people
are cowards
plain and simple
that's the only statement that makes

So here's to you
you gutless wonder
way to ruin some people's
day, dreams, lives

"may you live to own a hotel with a thousand rooms
and be found dead, in every one of them."

I hope you all are well.

Love and prayers to Beantown,

Taxes got done...

and I could give a shit about anything.

more meatballs made today
dinner was just alright
I think I maybe getting a little stressed out
by life

like that is something new
but at any rate
I will learn to deal
cause that is the option available

it's tough feeling like
the stitches you don't have
are getting torn from you
when you sneeze, cough, breathe too much

never want to do the catheter experiment again
end is still too far off to begin any sort of countdown
and even then, I worry about
shit not being right when its done

springing a leak, you know
or other processes and sensations
being impeded
or replaced by pain

but like George Michael says
"you gotta have faith"
I think I'll stick with hope
cause that shit springs eternal

time to get some zzzzz

I hope you all are well.

City of Westminster...

the year was 1998

and after 4 sweltering and sweaty months
landscaping in the land of ten thousand lakes
I was on my way from here

to here

Hey look kids, Big Ben, Parliament.

Excited, hell yes
first time out of Norte America
and had a passaporte to be stamped
things were on the up and up
lost 50 pounds over the summer
a result of ramen three meals
a day
and not to many tasty beverages
busting my ass
working like a field hand all summer
had paid off
and now I was able to call

home

Just by changing my latitude
my attitude had also changed
even though Slick Willy had just
dropped a whole bunch of bombs
on basically everyone in the neighborhood
after initially spitting on us for being amerikkkan
once they realized we are not all jackwagons
thing were all good
and when I walked into the door at

I didn't have to dodge spit
or worry about having shit thrown at me
my only worries were
getting to class on time
finding a place close by to buy toilet paper
and figuring out how much money a guy needed
to buy beer

I hope you all are well.

With the exception...

of family extended and otherwise,

I've lost pretty much everyone I care about
in the course of the past three years
I guess I'm not the swell guy I thought I was
or maybe my perception of myself
was
flawed
or skewed
or just plain
incorrect
whatever the reason
it forces a guy to make adjustments
some of which fall in the
uncomfortable

be that as it may
we adjust
and change
and grow
even when the past
several years
you have been
living under the auspices
of unemployment with no check
no health care
mental health at times questionable
at best
and last but not least
crushing self doubt

Oh I, I'm still alive
do I deserve to be?
Is that the question
and if so, if so
who answers, who answers?

I hope you all are well,

Mere puffery...

I hit 40 this week

Yeah great. Not as bad as I thought it was going to be but when you are limited activity wise, like I am, it’s not like I’m going to kick up my heels and go dancing.

health a constant concern
did more research
more things to think about
while you slowly but surely make you way
from my
subconscious
to my
waking mind
digging in
in a most unrelenting fashion
and how can one be mad about that
when I put the wheels in motion
almost twenty years ago
told the universe what was up
let it know
too bad you never got the memo

I hope you all are well.

I'm a jackass...

but I'm not a jerk.

at least I like to think so
but the more I go looking for inspiration
the more I want to scream into the void
that everything is boring
like a fucking petulant teenager
and I'm a bit too old to be doing that

so my search for stimulus continues
if only I were a married father of two kids
either commuting from the suburbs to the metro area
or a stay-at-home dad
juggling
the car pool schedule
art classes
soccer practice
and picking up the dry cleaning
(not that there is anything wrong with any of that. It's just not my ideal.)
whilst wishing I had not sold all my dreams
for what I was force fed to believe is
the american dream

I'm fucking boring myself just writing this
but I don't have the wherewithal
to tell you of the trials of my life
the last 3+ years
the ones which have tested my
physical and mental limits
more than any other in my entire life
eventually those tales will be told
but its not a story I choose to tell at this point

right now all I want to do
is drift off to either a dreamless slumber
or one filled with
dreams of hope and promise
which is more than I have for myself
yeah, someone pissed on my birthday cake today
but it could be worse

Walking Dead was really good tonight
I don't give a rats ass about March Madness
feeling a need to get back in the kitchen
work some knife skills
get nasty on some new and tasty dishes
and feel the summer sun
shine on my face
once again

word to hk

I hope you all are well.

Cheers,
JJ
